A Few Tips For Preventing Cracks In Your Windshield

Posted on: 11 May 2017

Once you have a crack or chip in your windshield it is only a matter of time before you are going to need to call for a repair or to have it replaced. Mobile windshield repair keeps you from having to go to a shop and wait around while it is being repaired. However, it is still going to cost you money or make you file an insurance claim. To help prevent having trouble with your windshield in the first place, here are a few things you should or should not do.

Park Inside

Damage to your windshield may occur when you are not in the car and driving. A stray baseball, a small rock that was kicked up by a passing vehicle, or anything blown around by the wind can hit the glass and cause a small crack. To avoid this, park inside any time it is possible. If you have a garage, always use it. If there is a parking garage at work or where you are shopping, park there instead of on the street or in a regular lot.

Avoid Temperature Extremes

During the hot summer months, make sure to keep the car out of the sun as much as possible. If you must park outside, without any type of coverage, consider using a portable screen on the outside of the windshield instead of putting in inside. This may require affixing some Velcro pieces to the screen and to the car or closing the sides of the screen in the window. In cold weather, do not turn the defroster up to high when you first get into the car. Wait until the heater is blowing warm and then turn it up. This may take a bit longer to get a clear windshield but you won't risk causing a small, unnoticed chip or crack to expand.

Watch the Road and Don't Tailgate

Make sure you pay attention to the road and the vehicles in front of you. If you notice pebbles, stones, or other debris on the road slow down and try to avoid driving directly into it. In addition, do not follow the vehicle in front of you too closely. It prevents you from seeing what is on the road ahead. If there are rocks or things that can fly up and hit the windshield they may be kicked up by the car in front of you and you won't have a chance to avoid them.

Wash your windshield regularly to make sure you are not missing any small cracks or chips. As soon as you do notice an imperfection contact a mobile windshield repair company to come and fix it. However, avoiding the damage if possible is always a good idea. For more information or assistance, contact companies like Glass Pro Inc.
